Stephen Curry: A New NBA Superstar
Some have called him the best shooter in NBA history. His team, the Golden State Warriors, has won the NBA Championship, and he has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player. Without doubt, Stephen Curry is a superstar. However, just a few years ago, his rise to greatness was thought by many to be a long shot.
Born in Ohio, Curry came from an athletic family. His father played in the NBA for 16 seasons and was an excellent shooter, and his mother played college volleyball. Growing up, however, Curry was short and skinny. In fact, he was usually one of the smallest players on his school teams. Though he worked hard and played well, he was not recruited by any major universities. He ended up going to Davidson College, a small school near his home.
At Davidson, Curry's greatness began to shine through. He also grew taller and stronger, and he even managed to lead his team to the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight. Still, many wondered if Curry would make it in the NBA.
Curry was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2009. In his first year in the NBA, Curry was named to the All-Rookie Team. He scored many points over the next few seasons but also suffered from several injuries. Despite these problems, he continued to work on his shooting, especially from long range.
Finally, in 2012, Curry found his stride and began to play at a higher level. He set—and then broke—his own record for the number of three-point shots made in one season. Today, he sometimes even shoots from half-court, and he makes an amazing 48 percent of these shots!
Curry's ability to make long shots comes partly from his discipline. He pays careful attention to his form while practicing, and he puts up 1,000 practice shots a week. He also does pregame warm-up routines that would probably tire out some of the strongest athletes.
Stephen Curry may not be the tallest or fastest NBA player. However, thanks to his dedication, he has become one of the best to ever play the game.
