Graduation Traditions around the World
世界各地的畢業傳統
Graduating from school is a special achievement. No matter where they’re celebrated, graduation ceremonies mark academic success and the conclusion of student life. But graduation traditions themselves are as different as the countries they come from. 
Britain
The graduation tradition of wearing long, heavy gowns and square hats that feature hanging tassels was first observed in Britain in the twelfth century. At that time, long gowns were worn to keep students warm in drafty classrooms and churches where classes were held. In modern undergraduate ceremonies, the tassel hangs at the right of the cap until students have officially graduated, and then it’s moved to the left. In Britain and other countries which have adopted the cap-and-gown tradition, students often toss4 their caps joyfully into the air at the end of the graduation ceremony.
Sweden
Rather than wearing traditional square academic caps, Swedish graduates wear white student caps that resemble military hats. Family members attending graduation ceremonies hold large signs that feature baby photos of the graduates. Parents give heartfelt gifts tied with ribbons; graduates then hang the ribbons around their necks for a parade around the city, usually while standing on the bed of a dump truck!

    從學校畢業是一項特殊的成就。無論在哪裡慶祝，畢業典禮都是在祝賀學業成就和學生生涯的結束。但畢業傳統本身與它們來自的國家一樣有所不同。

英國
    穿戴厚重的長袍和垂著流蘇的四方帽的畢業傳統，最早是在十二世紀的英國為人所奉行。當時，穿著長袍是要讓學生在有穿堂風的教室和教堂上課時能夠保暖。在現代大學生的畢業典禮上，直到學生正式畢業前流蘇（編注：亦稱「帽穗」）會垂在帽子右邊，之後再將它撥到左邊。在英國和其他採行方帽長袍傳統的國家，學生經常會在畢業典禮結束時興高采烈地將他們的帽子拋到空中。

瑞典
    瑞典的畢業生沒有戴傳統的四方帽，而是戴類似軍帽的白色學生帽。參加畢業典禮的家人會拿著畢業生嬰兒照片的大牌子。父母會送上綁著緞帶的誠摯禮物，接著畢業生會把緞帶掛在脖子上繞城遊行，通常是站在傾卸式卡車的貨斗上！

Italy 
Italian graduates must first appear in front of an academic board to answer questions about their field of study. After they’ve passed this test, graduates receive their degrees and are crowned with a laurel wreath. Once that’s over, the fun begins. In a tradition known as “trashing,” family and friends throw substances like ketchup, flour, syrup, and eggs at graduates, covering them from head to toe!
Japan
During Japanese high school graduation ceremonies, graduates typically wear their regular school uniforms while they sing songs and perform marching routines. Female graduates might ask for the second button of a male graduate’s school uniform, but only if the girl likes the boy. Some schools don’t have school uniforms, so in these cases, graduates wear formal clothing, such as a suit or hakama—a kind of kimono.
Finland
Finnish PhD graduates typically wear a black hat and carry a special sword to their ceremony. These items symbolize “the freedom of research and the fight for what is good, right, and true.” The sword is traditionally worn at the waist, on the left side of the body.
Whether your ceremony includes tassels, ketchup, ribbons, or swords, these diverse traditions prove that graduation is a meaningful event that closes the book on an important time in a student’s life.

義大利
    義大利畢業生必須先出現在學術委員會面前回答有關他們研究領域的問題。在通過考試後，畢業生就能獲得學位並被戴上桂冠。一旦結束，樂趣就開始了。在一項稱為「惡搞」的傳統裡，家人朋友會朝畢業生丟擲番茄醬、麵粉、糖漿和蛋等東西，弄得他們從頭到腳滿身都是！

日本
    在日本高中的畢業典禮上，畢業生通常會穿著平時的校服，一邊唱歌一邊行軍。女畢業生可能會向男畢業生要校服上的第二顆鈕扣，但只有在這個女生喜歡這個男生時才會這麼做。有些學校沒有校服，所以在這種情況下，畢業生會著正式服裝，像是西裝或「袴」（一種和服）。

芬蘭
    芬蘭的博士畢業生通常會戴黑帽子，並攜帶一把特殊的劍參加他們的典禮。這些物品象徵著    「研究自由以及為良善、正當、真理而戰」。傳統上劍會佩戴在腰部，在身體的左側。

    無論你的畢業典禮包含帽穗、番茄醬、緞帶還是劍，這些形形色色的傳統都證明了畢業是一個重要的事件，為學生生命中一個重要的時刻畫下句點。
