The “Penguin” of Nankan River
「南崁企鵝」 之謎
In 2018, a person in Taoyuan called the police about a “penguin” by the Nankan River. This was surprising because penguins live in cold places, not Taiwan. When the Wild Bird Society came to look, they found it wasn’t a penguin at all. It was a black-crowned night heron! Ever since that day, people have called this bird the “Nankan Penguin” as a joke. 
But how could someone think it was a penguin? Well, when the night heron stands and pulls its neck in, its black-and-white feathers and shape can make it look a bit like a penguin from far away. However, the night heron has much longer legs and a special tuft of feathers on its head.
This bird is found in many countries around the world. Adult birds have a black head and back with a gray or white body and bright red or yellow eyes. They have excellent night vision and usually hunt at night. However, young night herons look completely different: They have brown feathers and are covered in white spots.
二○一八年，桃園有民眾報警，表示在南崁溪旁有看到一隻「企鵝」。這件事讓人驚訝，因為企鵝生活在寒冷的地方，而非臺灣。當野鳥學會前去查看時，他們發現那根本不是企鵝。牠是一隻夜鷺！自那天起，人們便戲稱這種鳥為「南崁企鵝」。
但怎麼會有人認為牠是企鵝呢？嗯，當夜鷺站立並縮起脖子時，牠黑白相間的羽毛和體形讓牠從遠處看起來可能會有點像企鵝。然而，夜鷺的腿長得多，頭上還有一撮特別的羽毛。
這種鳥分布在世界各地許多國家。成鳥的頭部和背部為黑色，身體是灰色或白色的，眼睛則是鮮豔的紅色或黃色。牠們擁有極佳的夜視能力，通常在夜間覓食。不過，幼年的夜鷺看起來完全不同：牠們有棕色的羽毛，並布滿白色的斑點。

There’s more to the black-crowned night heron than its similarity to a penguin. These clever birds are known for their hunting skills. They eat fish, frogs, insects, and other small animals. The night heron usually hunts by standing very still at the edge of water, waiting patiently for animals to come closer. Then, it quickly grabs its prey with its sharp beak. Some night herons are even smart enough to use bread or small objects as bait to attract fish—a rare example of birds using tools!
Night herons are social birds that often live in groups, and they can build many nests in the same tree. What makes these birds even more unusual is that they may feed any hungry chick that looks for food, not just their own babies. This behavior shows how these birds work together as a community. 
Though they may look strange and be mistaken for other birds, the black-crowned night heron is still an interesting bird that is worth our attention.
夜鷺的特別之處不僅僅在於與企鵝相似。這些聰明的鳥類以其捕獵技巧聞名。牠們會捕食魚類、青蛙、昆蟲及其他小動物。夜鷺通常站在水邊一動也不動，耐心等待動物靠近。然後，牠會用尖銳的鳥喙迅速抓住獵物。有些夜鷺甚至聰明到會用麵包或小物體作為誘餌吸引魚類——這是鳥類使用工具的罕見例子！
夜鷺是群居的鳥類，經常群體生活，而且牠們可能會在同一棵樹上築許多巢。讓這些鳥更不尋常的是，牠們可能會餵食任何尋找食物的饑餓雛鳥，而不僅僅是自己的寶寶。這種行為展現了這些鳥類如同一個群體般地合作。
雖然牠們看起來可能有點奇特，也可能被誤認為是其他鳥類，但夜鷺仍然是一種值得我們關注的有趣鳥類。
