The bestselling author of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testamentsweaves together strands of gothic suspense, romance, and science fiction into one utterly spellbinding narrative, beginning with the mysterious death of a young woman named Laura Chase in 1945.

Decades later, Laura’s sister Iris recounts her memories of their childhood, and of the dramatic deaths that have punctuated their wealthy, eccentric family’s history. Intertwined with Iris’s account are chapters from the scandalous novel that made Laura famous, in which two illicit lovers amuse each other by spinning a tale of a blind killer on a distant planet.

These richly layered stories-within-stories gradually illuminate the secrets that have long haunted the Chase family, coming together in a brilliant and astonishing final twist.

Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood is Canada's most eminent novelist, poet and critic. Her books include The Edible Woman, Surfacing, Lady Oracle, Alias Grace, Cat's Eye, which was short-listed for the Booker Prize and The Handmaid's Tale, which won both the Arthur C. 2000 The Man Booker Prize winner.

This is a difficult piece of reading to me. It needs a lot of rereading and dictionary work to get the essence. Atwood used her poetic touch to depict lives of two sisters, their destinies were so entwined that were hard to be separated apart; at the same time, they are so different to contrast to each others that led them to two drastically different paths.

Laura was taking nothing for granted, which usually leads to a tragic character; Iris was leading her predestined life with most pessimistic and vindictive attitude. They both in love with the rebellious Alex Thomas, and they have different ways to resolve their affections. Though her life was cut short, Laura had won fame and sympathy from a book bearing her name. Though she lived a so-called spectacular life, to be a marionette, Iris was suffering every bit of it, especially from the antagonism from her closest family, her nanny Reenie, her daughter Aimee, and her granddaughter Sabrina.

Atwood used a special technique to tell a story of these two sisters that reminds me of Montage. There are three parallel stories going on: the main story addressed by Iris, the main thread of the book \"the Blind Assassin\" by Laura\’s name, and a fairytale like story of \"the Blind Assassin\", which is a story in a story. They sounded like totally unrelated stories in the beginning, but when they started emerging towards to the end of the book, I could hardly tell what story I was reading. And it finally came round to be united under one first-person narrator, everything makes sense.

At the end, it gives the readers such a closure that I felt so sympathetic for their lives and want to shed some tears for Iris. It\’s a beautiful and elegant story from Atwood.
