安迪‧威爾　Andy Weir

　　我們可以說安迪在科學方面天賦異稟：父母分別是微粒子物理學家及工程師，15歲即被美國國家實驗室延攬，之後專職電腦程式工程師，熱愛物理相對論、軌道力學和火箭，是個不折不扣的太空宅男。

　 　我們也可以說安迪在創作小說方面很有一套：起初，他的短篇小說被文學經紀人拒於門外，但她不放棄；2009年，他開始寫長篇連載小說《火星任務》，並放 上自己的網站讓人免費閱讀，沒想到大批讀者來信要求，希望能出版電子書讓他們收藏；於是2013年，他在亞馬遜自費出版電子書，三個月內便賣出的 35,000本，引起了有聲書出版商的興趣，美國皇冠出版集團更用六位數買下紙本書的版權，他還得到了一紙二十世紀福斯影業的電影合約。《火星任務》是他 創作的第一本小說，至於下一本書嘛，他打算寫寫看科幻犯罪小說。（當然少不了科學囉！）

So after watching the movie adaptation of the book starring Matt Damon, I didn't really give any thought to the movie afterwards for a few months.
Then I saw the novel with the movie cover at a bookstore. I picked it up and flipped a few pages, and I was hooked. I immediately bought it on the spot.
When I finished the book at my home. I read it again. Then again. And then again.

The book is narrated using the Hab ‘logs’, a series of written or audio recordings saved on the computers.

In 2035, NASA astronaut Mark Watney is left stranded on his own on Mars when a sandstorm unexpectedly goes in on the crew of Ares 3 while they are collecting samples. As the team considers which course of action to take, a satellite antenna, blown off by the sandstorm, flies into Watney in the sandstorm, and impales him away. Unable to search for him, the other members of his team, Beth Johanssen, Alex Vogel, Melissa Lewis, Rick Martinez, ,and Chris Beck are forced to leave Mars on the Mars Ascent Vehicle(MAV).

Meanwhile, on Earth, a month after Watney's 'alleged' death, Director of Mars Missions Venkat Kapoor argues with Director of NASA Teddy Sanders over the decision of taking pictures of the Hab, the latter concerned that any pictures of the Hab would contain pictures of Watney's body.
In the end, Teddy Sanders assigns SatCon worker Mindy Park to take pictures of the Hab.
While reviewing the pictures, Mindy realizes that equipment by the Hab has been moved, and comes to the realization that Watney is still alive, and reports the news to Venkat Kapoor, who authorizes Annie Montrose, NASA's PR director, to report to the press that Watney is alive on Mars.
After the report, NASA's satellites track Watney using the Mars rover to retrieve Pathfinder and Sojourner to communicate with NASA. After NASA establishes contact with Watney, they allow the Ares 3 Flight Director, Mitch Henderson, to inform the crew of Hermes of Watney’s survival.
The Hermes crew is overjoyed at learning about Watney’s survival, but Melissa Lewis, commander of Hermes, blames herself for the situation that left Watney stranded on Mars.

Back on Mars, as Watney enters the airlock to the Hab, it bursts from a miniscule tear caused by Watney overusing the airlock. The Hab is breached, and all of Watney’s growing potatoes are killed.
After Watney repairs the Hab and informs NASA about his predicament, they make a unmanned probe loaded with supplies to launch to Mars, but the probe is destroyed on launch.
After the China National Space Administration, learns about the situation, they decide to strike a deal with NASA, exchanging their new booster, the Taiyang Shen for the price of a Chinese Astronaut on the upcoming Ares 5 mission.

With the new booster, NASA is given two decisions, of which both require the Taiyang Shen. The first one is a Crashlander which will impact on mars at 300kph.
The second one, presented by astrodynamicist Rich Purnell, is using the Taiyang Shen to send supplies to Hermes instead, and use a ‘slingshot trajectory’ to propel Hermes back to Mars on an extended trip to pick Watney up while he uses the MAV to rendezvous with them at the Ares 4 site.

Sanders vetoes the ‘Rich Purnell Maneuver’ as being ‘too dangerous’, and risking the lives of too many people.
However, Mitch Henderson disagrees, and secretly sends the maneuver schematics to Alex Vogel, the navigator and chemist of Hermes. Vogel then explains the maneuver to the crew of Hermes, who are all for saving Watney.
As they advance to Earth, they start accelerating, to preserve their maximum velocity speed to travel to Mars, and NASA has no choice but to send the booster, or else the Hermes crew will starve to death.

After Hermes’ stunt, NASA contacts Watney to get ready for the journey to Ares 4’s MAV.
While modifying the rover for the journey to Ares 4, Watney accidently trips the electronics of Pathfinder, and fries its insides, removing his only source of contact to NASA. Watney then arranges rocks using Morse Code and continues modifying the rover, the plan still unchanged.
After he finishes the modifications, Watney starts the long journey to the Ares 4 landing site.

As Watney makes his journey to the Ares 4 MAV, the crew of Hermes runs into minor technical problems, as their life support system is failing, but Dr. Beck fixes it.
When Watney arrives at the MAV, he establishes contact with NASA using the MAV’s satellite radio.
NASA then instructs him to strip the MAV of most of the core items, the additional seats for crew members, the life support, and the head of the craft, which he covers instead with a leftover Hab canvas.
As Hermes arrives at Mars, Watney launches the MAV, but the Hab canvas tears during the lift off, slowing down the ascent of the MAV, and moving the MAV out of its original course, and away from Hermes.
Lewis then devises a plan to intercept the MAV by using Hermes, altitude thrusters, and using an improvised bomb made by Vogel to blow up one airlock and use the pressure to accelerate and intercept the MAV.
Chris Beck then uses a Manned Maneuvering Unit(MMU)to intercept Watney from the MAV and escorts him back to Hermes.
Back aboard on Hermes, Watney expresses his joy and faith in humanity in a final log entry.
