A Farewell To Arms

　　歐內斯特‧海明威是美國乃至整個英語世界的天才作家，早期出版《太陽照樣昇起》，使他成為「迷惘的一代」的代表作家，並在《戰地春夢》表達厭戰情緒。晚期以《老人與海》獲普立茲獎及瑞典皇家科學院授予諾貝爾文學獎，深受世人喜愛與肯定。

　　In writing A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway was inspired by his own wartime experience as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross. First published in 1929, the novel made his name and remains one of his finest works.

海明威

　　1899年7月21日誕生於美國伊利諾州的橡樹園，在六個兄弟姐妹中排行第二，父親為醫 生，母親出身望族。第一次世界大戰期間，海明威應徵義大利軍的紅十字會救護車司機，腿部被迫擊砲碎片炸成重傷，住院期間結識一位女護士，兩人墜入愛河。這 段戀情雖未能長久，海明威卻始終難以忘懷，日後他的著名小說《戰地春夢》，即以該名護士為女主角。二次大戰，海明威親身參與游擊隊的戰役，並以1936年 參與西班牙內戰的經歷，寫成著名的《戰地鐘聲》。在海明威與第二任妻子寶琳居住西礁島時，其身分從美國最著名的作家搖身一變為美國最著名的漁夫。《老人與 海》的故事便緣起於此，並於1954年以此書獲得諾貝爾文學獎。海明威作品特色為：文字簡單，寓意深遠。不只風靡美國，也風靡全世界。與海明威同為廿世紀 美國文學巨擘、也榮獲諾貝爾文學獎的福克納對他推崇備至，稱譽海明威的作品是「文學界的奇蹟」。晚年由於積勞成疾，數度入院接受電擊治療，於1961年7 月2日凌晨，被發現死在自宅樓下的槍架前，一般認為係屬自殺。

　　Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899. His father was a doctor and he was the second of six children. Their home was at Oak Park, a Chicago suburb.
　
　　In 1917, Hemingway joined the Kansas City Star as a cub reporter. The following year, he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, where he was badly wounded but decorated for his services. He returned to America in 1919, and married in 1921. In 1922, he reported on the Greco-Turkish war before resigning from journalism to devote himself to fiction. He settled in Paris where he renewed his earlier friendships with such fellow-American expatriates as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Their encouragement and criticism were to play a valuable part in the formation of his style

　　Hemingway's first two published works were Three Stories and Ten Poems and In Our Time but it was the satirical novel, The Torrents of Spring, that established his name more widely. His international reputation was firmly secured by his next three books; Fiesta, Men Without Women and A Farewell to Arms.

　　He was passionately involved with bullfighting, big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing and his writing reflected this. He visited Spain during the Civil War and described his experiences in the bestseller, For Whom the Bell Tolls.

　　His direct and deceptively simple style of writing spawned generations of imitators but no equals. Recognition of his position in contemporary literature came in 1954 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.
