Education, Retirement and Career Transitions for ’’black’’ Ex-Professional Footballers: ’’from Being Idolised to Stacking Shelves’’

Drawing on a combination of interviews and auto-ethnographic data, Education, Retirement and Career Transitions for ’Black’ Ex-Professional Footballers provides a case-study of 16 ’black’ British male professional footballers’ preparedness and experiences of retirement and transition from careers as professional athletes to mainstream work.

Paul Ian Campbell is an award winning academic and Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Leicester. His work focuses on race, ethnicity, and sport. His previous work on race and local football in the British East Midlands won the British Sociological Association’s Philip Abrams Memorial Prize in 2017.
