While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president--and though history has downplayed her role--just over a century ago a woman became the nation’s first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. She climbed her way out of Appalachian poverty and into the highest echelons of American power and in 1919 effectively acted as the first woman president of the U.S. (before women could even vote nationwide) when her husband, Woodrow Wilson, was incapacitated. Rebecca Boggs Roberts is an author, journalist, political consultant, and museum educator. She has spoken to sold-out crowds at the Smithsonian, The Library of Congress, and the National Archives, as well as many historical societies and women’s clubs nationwide and is a leading historian of American women’s suffrage and civic participation. She is currently Curator of Programming at DC’s Planet Word Museum and previously served at the Smithsonian’s Associates program and Historic Congressional Cemetery. Roberts has also worked as an award-winning radio journalist and has appeared as a substitute host on NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition, among others. She serves on the board of National Archives Foundation and participates in advisory boards for The Historical Society of Washington, the White House Historical Association, the DC Council of Arts and Humanities, and others.
