譯者的財經金融(尤其是投資理財)實務非常札實，而且相關類別書籍翻譯已達數十本，還得過獎。譯者的職場生涯和譯作屬於『工具理性』（Instrumental Rationality）的範疇，而且在該領域專業水準罕有他人可以媲美。

問題就在於《資本主義：金錢、道德與市場》的內容大大超脫『工具理性』，而盤旋上升到的『價值理性』(Value Rationality)的範疇。原著作者John Plender 雖然是一位金融高層人員，但是西方博雅教育的底子很強，展現典型西方知識份子的內涵與氣質，這是台灣金融業者完全不及的。

這本書處處帶有人文與社會科學知識、風采和價值判斷，引述很多文學、史學、哲學、神學、政治學、經濟學、藝術大師的言論與作品。

拓展翻譯書類問題很多

譯者要加大、拓展、深化翻譯領域，是一種好現象，這是努力上進與成長的表現。然而，自修或進修到某種程度，才可以從容穩妥跨出去，沒有做好準備就跨，難免跌跌撞撞。

再者，譯者的翻譯書類範圍要擴大，應該注意橫向與垂直擴大的不同。由工具理性（技術、技巧、操作、條例、制度、基礎、入門、查閱）往價值理性擴大，屬於垂直型，千萬莫輕率為之。

譬如：由投資理財進到資本主義批判，由刑法進到法律哲學（法理學），由民法婚姻篇進到法律經濟學（法律的經濟分析），由政治學進到政治哲學，由生物工程進到生命倫理學，由麻將心法進到博弈理論，由物理學進到科學哲學······。

令人噴飯的亂譯

在《資本主義：金錢、道德與市場》譯本25頁中間，原著作者引述法國啟蒙思想家伏爾泰的 Letters on England (1778) ：

"Take a view of the Royal Exchange in London, a place more venerable than many courts of justice, where the representatives of all nations meet for the benefit of mankind. There the Jew, the Mahometan, and the Christian transact together, as though they all professed the same religion, and give the name of infidel to none but bankrupts. There thee Presbyterian confides in the Anabaptist, and the Churchman depends on the Quaker's word. At the breaking up of this pacific and free assembly, some withdraw to the synagogue, and others to take a glass. This man goes and is baptized in a great tub, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost； that man has his son's foreskin cut off, whilst a set of Hebrew words (quite unintelligible to him) are mumbled over his child. Others retire to their churches, and there wait for the inspiration of heaven with their hats on, and all are satisfied.”

第一句中的 courts of justice（法院）居然被錯譯為『宮廷』（譯本25頁4行）；倒數第二句 that man has his son's foreskin cut off, whilst a set of Hebrew words (quite unintelligible to him) are mumbled over his child，明明是一個猶太人依照猶太教規而為兒子行割禮（割包皮），his child 就是他的這個小孩，卻被譯成『聖嬰』（譯本25頁倒數3行）。

後面這個錯誤除了顯示譯者與編輯的英文不佳之外，也凸顯他們缺乏宗教常識：猶太教只信《希伯來聖經》（舊約聖經）而不接受新約聖經，只信耶和華上帝而不信耶穌。

在153頁2行後半到3行：令人不由得想起中古世紀『學校老師』常用的那種推論式論證方法。

有點哲學常識者一看就知道『學校老師』是亂譯，scholasticism 的正確翻譯是『經院哲學』。

在258頁倒數6行提及馬克思的『異化論』（Karl Marx's theory of alienation），卻被譯者查閱一般字典，就選個中文意思而翻譯為『離間論』。

胡亂加譯注

這位譯過數十本優秀投資理財書籍的譯者，特別鍾愛這本書的財經部分，只要他擔心讀者看不懂的部分就加譯注，前後數十個。如果譯者與編輯在行文當中比較有深度或疑難的部分，加上譯注與編注，可以給自己和讀者長知識，也會使譯本加分。
