Lights of Hong Kong (extract)

1
streetlights iust lit, we don’t know when they’ll go off
car lights coming and going on travelers’ weariness,
gradually merging
with the uneven yellow or pale glow of a million homes
whatever sense with which we sense Hong Kong
is the light with which Hong Kong senses us
what we cannot sense may be great beyond words

the lights turned on, because they felt people snuffing out
their language, looking wearily at Hong Kong floating
on the mirror of the sea
history yellow like a home about to be demolished
then reconstructed in a blink into a Symphony of
Lights!
tongues tied and eyes wide, we involuntarily ioin
a firework flower production for tourists with one
poisonous petal

dazzle on dazzle, people gather like night bugs beneath
lights
to fly to solid and burning utopias
numbers rise then soften, downcast eyes yet
drift toward this imposed Symphony
the last ferry is like magic under neon lights
conjuring doves, land, and rabbit maidens
only seamen see through the layered highrises
to the habour dim beneath broken lights
