英文中，形容詞的比較類別及基本句型如下：

I.    使用原級形容詞做同等比較時用as…as來表達，as…as中間置放的形容詞必用原級，即形容詞原始的字。S + as + 形容詞原級 + as...，用於肯定句。S + not as / not so + 形容詞原級 + as…，則用於否定句，表示較劣等的情境。
* This novel is as interesting as that one.
這本小說跟那本小說一樣有趣。
* The watch cost as much money as that one.
這隻手錶跟那隻手錶一樣貴。

II.    使用比較級形容詞比較時，優等比較中，形容詞是單音節字的句型是主詞加比較級 (~er) + than…，形容詞是多音節字時是more + 形容詞原級 + than…。劣等比較則是主詞加less + 形容詞原級 + than…。
* The apartment is smaller than the mansion.
這座公寓比那棟豪宅小。
* Bill is more intelligent than Tim.
比爾比提姆聰明。

III.    表示「逐漸…」的比較，常用 –er / more and –er / more。表示「比例」的比較，則常用  the + 形容詞比較級 …, the + 形容詞比較級 ….。
* More and more people are not satisfied with the traffic jam
 downtown. 越來越多人不滿於市區的塞車。

* Fewer and fewer students are seen to hang around in this cyber café.
越來越少的學生被看見在這座網咖流連。

IV.    形容詞最高級比較時則用主詞加動詞 + 定冠詞the，後接最高級，加上介系詞of或in再加上某一範圍的片語。
* Mary is the tallest girl in her class.
瑪莉是班上最高的女生。
* The Nile is the longest river in the world.
尼羅河是全世界最長的河流。
* To Willy, English is the most important subject of all.
對威力來說，英文是所有科目當中最重要的。
