這套錄音非常難得地把指揮家杜拉第在1981到84年間指揮底特律交響樂團為Philips所灌錄的史特拉汶斯基四大芭蕾都收集在一起。杜拉第是歷史上少數唯一三度灌錄史特拉汶斯基春之祭的指揮家，底特律交響樂團是他生平最後接下的一個樂團，他從1977年接下該團，當時他已經七十一高齡，生平始終沒有接下過歐美頂尖樂團的他，如今卻因為留下許多經典錄音，而讓世人遺憾沒有早一點認識這位默默耕耘的指揮家。

杜拉第在1981年卸下底特律交響樂團的職務後，於1988年以八十二歲辭世。雖然卸下指揮工作，但他還是在1984年再度與該團合作，錄下本錄音中第二片CD裡的三首芭蕾舞曲。這三首作品中，最不為人所知的是《幻想詼諧曲》，這是史特拉汶斯基早期的創作，寫於1908年，為其生平第二部管弦作品，乃受到梅特林克作品靈感激發所創作。當時史特拉汶斯基還在俄國接受林姆斯基-高沙可夫的指導。此曲後來在1972年被美國編舞家傑洛米羅賓斯改編成芭蕾舞，供紐約市立芭蕾舞團演出。《阿波羅》一曲是1928年就完成的芭蕾舞劇，當時舞服設計就是後來大名鼎鼎的服裝設計大師可可．香奈兒。這部舞劇有多個不同版本，本錄音使用的是1947年的版本。
