Child Welfare: Perspectives from Social Work

Child Welfare: Preparing Social Workers for Practice in the Field is a comprehensive text for child welfare courses taught from a social work perspective. This textbook provides a single source for all material necessary for a contextual child welfare course.

As well as combining history, theory, and practice, the authors integrate different practice perspectives to teach social workers how to engage children and families at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Covering both broad issues, such as child welfare, child maltreatment, and responses to child maltreatment, and current issues in social care, including mandated reporting and evidence-based policy prevention and preservation, the material is designed to meet the needs of social work students entering the child welfare workforce.

Dr. Krase earned her Ph.D. in Social Work, her Juris Doctor and her Master in Social Work from Fordham University. She co-wrote the book, Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect: A Practical Guide for Social Workers with Ken Lau and Dick Morse. She previously served as the Associate Director of Fordham University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Family and Child. Dr. Krase also served as the Clinical Social Work Supervisor for the Family Defense Clinic at New York University Law School.

Dr. Hamilton has been teaching in higher education since 2000; as an adjunct instructor from 2000-2008 and full time since 2009. .Dr. Hamilton has worked in the social work field for almost 20 years and has experience in child welfare, adoptions, medical, and psychiatric social work. Prior to teaching full time, she worked in private practice as a psychotherapist specializing in family and childhood issues. While in private practice, she maintained a connection to public child welfare by evaluating, writing reports, and testifying as an expert witness for children in foster care.
