內容簡介

This book offers an in-depth introduction to the world of psychotherapy for dogs, an area that has received little attention to date. It begins with a fundamental question: Why dogs? The author analyses the unique relationship between dogs and humans, looks at the effects of domestication on the psychological well-being of dogs and compares this with other domesticated animals such as cats and horses.
The second part of the book emphasises the importance of mental health in dogs. The reader is given an insight into the historical development of psychotherapy in animals and learns about the differences and similarities to human psychotherapy.
The third part is dedicated to the basics of the canine psyche. Various instincts such as hunting, herding and territorial instincts as well as emotions and cognitive abilities are discussed in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the bond between dogs and humans and the recognition of stress and fear signals in dogs.
The following section deals with the causes of mental disorders in dogs. The author looks at genetic predispositions, prenatal factors and the influence of traumatic experiences, environment and lifestyle on the dog’s psyche.
Part IV deals with the diagnosis and assessment of mental disorders in dogs. Various methods of detecting these disorders, from behavioural observation to veterinary examination and behavioural assessment, are discussed in detail.
The fifth part of the book deals with treatment methods in dog psychotherapy. Behavioural approaches, training and education, adaptations to the environment and routines as well as medicinal and alternative therapy methods are presented. Individual approaches are presented for specific diagnoses such as aggressive behaviour, anxiety behaviour and depressive symptoms.
Finally, the sixth part of the book deals with prevention and practical help. It provides tips on how to recognise problems at an early stage, preventative measures and information on who to turn to for help.
This book is an indispensable guide for every dog owner who is interested in the mental well-being of dogs and wants to improve it. It offers not only in-depth theoretical insights, but also practical guidance and support to improve the lives of our four-legged companions.

Spine:

This book is a comprehensive guide to psychotherapy for dogs, an innovative and under-researched field. It begins by examining the special relationship between dogs and humans and the effects of domestication on the psychological well-being of dogs, compared to other animals such as cats and horses. A major focus is on the mental health of dogs, highlighting historical aspects of animal psychotherapy as well as parallels and differences with human psychotherapy.
The core of the book deals with the fundamentals of canine psychology, including instincts, emotions and cognition. The causes of psychological disorders in dogs, such as genetic factors, environmental influences and traumatic experiences, as well as their diagnosis and assessment are considered in detail. This is followed by a thorough discussion of various treatment methods, from behavioural approaches to medication and alternative forms of therapy, each adapted to specific diagnoses.
The book concludes with practical advice on the prevention and early detection of mental health problems in dogs. It is an essential guide for dog owners and professionals who want to improve the mental wellbeing of dogs, offering both sound theoretical knowledge and practical guidance.
