Upstream, more and more factories were being set up: all along Sections 1 and 2 of Rd. were fabric dyeing and electroplating workshops. Contaminated water went directly into Wansheng River—I remember how the water was always shimmering with varying colors. Soon, there was only one kind of fish left to be found: tilapia. The converging point of Wansheng and Xindian Rivers used to teem with fish and shrimp, but before we knew it, nothing was left but a sheen of oil on dreadfully dirty water. Before I was ten, we could catch fish in the river and make a meal out of it. Not anymore.
