The current Wansheng River does not fit the one in my memory—it has meandered and changed. Its outlet was once situated right below Fuhe Bridge, and there wasn’t so much water—it was more of a clean ditch actually. Decades ago my grandpa grew vegetables on both sides of the river; you could cross it by jumping across certain small gaps that existed back then. And so we don’t really have much of a memory of playing at Wansheng River, because it was just tiny. When the water was still clean, you could catch all sorts of fish at the point where Xindian and Wansheng Rivers converged. The crowd of the fishermen was such that fishing hooks often got tangled. I mean, once hooked, the fish gets frantic and moves about wildly, causing a mess of tangled fishing lines. In addition to fishing, clams and crabs were a-plenty for catching at the mouth of Wansheng River. However, things began to change when I got to junior high—the water quality deteriorated.
