The Dumplings of the World
世界各地的「餃子」

It seems like every part of the world has its own version of the delicious treat known as dumplings. For example, dumplings have been eaten in China for over 1,800 years, and recipes for dumplings can be found in cookbooks dating back to ancient Rome. But with so many kinds of dumplings around the world, how can we tell one from the other?
East Asia
There’s a huge variety of dumplings in East Asia. Mostly originating in China, they vary from the classic jiaozi to the spicy Sichuan wonton to the soup-filled xiaolongbao. Hong Kong has excelled in the art of dim sum, which features hundreds of different kinds of dumpling dishes. Siumaai, a type of pork and mushroom dumpling, is perhaps the most famous of these. And in Japan, fried dumplings, or gyoza, are a well-loved snack.
South Asia
Have you ever heard of momos? They’re common in India, Tibet, and Nepal. They look like the Chinese baozi but can have a wider variety of fillings. In Indonesia, the siomay is a popular fish dumpling that is shaped like a cone and usually served with a peanut sauce.
    似乎世界上每個地方都各自有稱為「餃子」的美味佳餚。舉例來說，在中國吃餃子已有超過一千八百年的歷史，而餃子的食譜可在追溯到古羅馬時期的料理書中找到。但世界各地有這麼多種餃子，我們要如何分辨其差別呢？
東亞
東亞有各式各樣的餃子。它們大多起源於中國，從經典的餃子到辛辣的四川抄手，再到充滿湯汁的小籠包各有不同。香港擅長點心這門手藝，特色是數百種不同的餃子料理。燒賣（一種香菇豬肉餃子）可能是這類食物中最有名的。而在日本，煎餃（又稱「日式煎餃」）是備受喜愛的點心。
南亞
你有聽過饃饃嗎？它們在印度、西藏和尼泊爾都很常見。它們看起來像中式包子但能有更多不同種類的餡料。在印尼，清蒸魚餃是一種受歡迎的魚餃，形狀像圓錐體且通常搭配花生醬汁來食用。

Europe and Central Asia
Some historians think the dumpling originated in the Middle East, possibly in Turkey. The many kinds of dumplings that are found across Central Asia would seem to support that claim. For example, in Georgia, there’s the khinkali, which is filled with spiced meat. Farther west, we find Italian ravioli, square pockets of pasta typically stuffed with meat and served in soup or topped with sauce. Similar foods are found across Europe, such as bacon-topped pierogi in Poland or potato-filled vareniki in Ukraine. Some might say the Cornish pasty, a common English pastry filled with ground beef, is a kind of dumpling. But most people would say it’s too big and is more like a pie!
South America
Dumplings aren’t found only in Asia and Europe. In Argentina, for example, the empanada is very popular. It’s pastry that is stuffed with ingredients such as meat, cheese, corn, or tomato, and then baked or fried. 
Was the dumpling first invented in one place and then taken across the world? Or did human beings around the globe independently start wrapping fillings in dough? One thing is certain: they are delicious wherever they are made!
歐洲與中亞
有些歷史學家認為餃子源自於中東，可能源自土耳其。見於中亞各地的多種餃子似乎能支持這項說法。舉例來說，在喬治亞有卡里餃，裡面填滿加了調料的肉餡。再往西，我們會找到義大利方餃，這通常是塞滿肉的方形口袋狀的麵食，放在湯裡面或淋上醬汁來食用。類似的食物在歐洲各地都能找到，像是上面撒了培根的波蘭餃子或填滿馬鈴薯的烏克蘭餃子。有些人也許會說康瓦爾餡餅（一種塞滿牛絞肉的英國常見糕點）是一種餃子。不過大多數人會說它太大了，比較像是派！
南美洲
餃子不只存在於亞洲和歐洲。例如在阿根廷，恩潘納達就很受歡迎。這是塞滿肉、起司、玉米或番茄等食材，之後再烘烤或油炸的油酥點心。
    餃子是先在一個地方發明然後再被帶到世界各地的嗎？還是全球各地的人各自開始把餡料包進麵團裡呢？有件事是肯定的：不管它們是在哪裡做的都很好吃！
