At some point in the last year, you may have come across this clip of popular K-pop boy band BTS. This viral1 video of a performance for NPR Music has been viewed over 31 million times.

But what you may not know is those videos have one thing in common.

They were filmed at the same location in Seoul.
This is the Hyundai Card Music Library. It’s owned by the South Korean conglomerate,3 and as a library, the space is home to 10,000 rare vinyl4 records and thousands of rare music publications.5 But it’s also known for much more, including stages for live performances, with some internationally acclaimed6 stars you may recognize. And though the global pandemic has put a halt to major music concerts around the world, here in Korea, it’s given rise to a new, accessible,7 online alternative.8

Some projects made during this pandemic have been used as an opportunity to develop and expand.9

Their ultimate10 goal—to provide high-quality, online concerts and reconnect artists with their fans.

Now in the pandemic, when it is hard to see concerts off-line, we thought about how to make the musicians and fans meet in a different way. The reason why we are doing all this is because music and art are all [both] an important part of culture.

The music library also hosts a series called “Fan-made LIVE,” an interactive system where fans can make song requests and ask artists questions using a dedicated11 site called Dive.

It’s a platform that allows a user to watch the live concerts, but also when we make an announcement, fans can comment12 to tell us what they want to see.

It’s also being used to connect Korean musicians with fans outside of the country.

The app is borderless,13 and everyone can participate whenever they want, and there are many comments from international fans, too. The advantages of socially distant [distanced] shows like this is that everyone can easily participate.

While the popularity of virtual performances continues to rise, Ryu says innovation is essential for in-person14 events, too.

Like other brands, we’re looking forward to the time of post-pandemic, and I think everyone is preparing to do the events we couldn’t have done.

Whether in person or safely distanced, she hopes that innovation in entertainment will allow everyone to connect once again.

Fans and musicians have to meet for music to happen, and there should be communication between them. In order to do this, they need to be together in a certain place. But in times like this [these], with social distance and restrictions, meeting each other, regardless of15 the platform, becomes meaningful. Fans and artists want to connect, and for that, we have to say, the show must go on.
