When we hear the word pyramid, the image that often comes to mind is one of enormous triangular* monuments in a sandy* desert. It turns out, however, that these architectural* marvels1 can be found all over the world, on almost every continent.
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
Let’s start with the iconic objects of that sandy desert picture: the Pyramids of Giza. At this pyramid complex, visitors can see the oldest and last remaining wonder of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, this impressive structure was built in the 26th century BC as a tomb for the Egyptian king Khufu. Requiring around 2.3 million stone blocks for its construction2 and with an original height of 147 meters, it has colossal proportions,3 even by today’s standards.
Pyramid of Cestius, Italy
Built sometime between 18 and 12 BC, the Pyramid of Cestius is one of the best-preserved buildings from the Roman imperial4 period and serves as an excellent example of the Roman fascination5 with Egyptian culture and architecture at the time. Commissioned6 as a personal tomb by Gaius Cestius, a wealthy Roman official, the 35-meter-tall pyramid displays traces of its Roman heritage7 in the painted frescoes* on the interior8 walls.
我們聽到「金字塔」這個單詞時，經常浮現於腦海的影像就是沙漠中其中一座巨大的三角遺跡。然而，結果是，這些建築奇觀可以在世界各地找到，幾乎每一洲都有。
埃及的吉薩金字塔

Pyramid of the Sun, Mexico
Little is known about the people that built the prehistoric* city of Teotihuacan, whose ancient buildings are a source of wonder to this day. The area contains a number of remarkably9 intact10 pyramids, the largest of which is the Pyramid of the Sun, a massive11 structure that dominates12 the central city. While the exact purpose of the pyramid remains a mystery, archaeologists* believe it was once topped with a temple and used as a place of worship.13
Mayan Pyramids of Tikal, Guatemala
Another city of pyramids and monuments can be found in Tikal National Park in Guatemala. Tikal was once an important ceremonial* center for the Mayans, but it fell into decline and was eventually abandoned.14 The ruins15 lay hidden for centuries, until an expedition16 sent out by the Guatemalan government officially discovered them in 1848. Scattered among the jungle are more than 3,000 structures, six of which have been fully uncovered.
Pyramids continue to amaze and mystify* us. These ancient buildings have stood the test of time, and though we may not always know why or how they were constructed, we can be sure that they will be here for generations to come. As an old Arab proverb says, “Man fears time, but time fears the pyramids.”

墨西哥的太陽金字塔 
我們對於建造史前城市特奥蒂瓦坎的人知之甚少，其古老的建築物至今仍是個奇觀。這個區域包含許多保存非常完好的金字塔，其中最大的一個是太陽金字塔，是中心城市最顯著的一個大型建築物。儘管這座金字塔確切的用途仍是個謎，但考古學家認為金字塔頂端曾有座寺廟，並且作為祭拜的場所。
瓜地馬拉的馬雅提卡爾金字塔
在瓜地馬拉的提卡爾國家公園可以找到另一個金字塔與遺跡之城。提卡爾曾是馬雅人重要的儀式中心，但卻逐漸沒落，最終被荒廢。這個遺址隱藏了好幾個世紀，直到一八四八年，瓜地馬拉政府派遣一支探險隊才正式發現它們。散布在叢林中有超過三千座建築物，其中六座已被完全挖掘出來。
金字塔繼續讓我們感到驚嘆與迷惑。這些古老建築物經歷了時間的考驗，雖然我們可能不一定知道它們為何建造或如何建造，但我們可以確定，在未來幾個世代它們還會屹立在此。正如阿拉伯古諺語所說：「人懼怕時間，但時間懼怕金字塔。」
